When the ground feels shaky beneath your feet….what do you do?

If you’re on volcanic land you might run to safety, here in the uk there have been some mighty winds and storms of late, but then in the USA, there has been shaky ground of another kind, the kind where perhaps the rug has been ‘pulled from under your feet’ shall we say?

Life can be very unpredictable, and when there is emotional turbulence eg when certain events are potentially triggering, like this big festive season coming upon us…

What do you do?

Who can you turn to?

What if you feel that no one really understands in the world, and you feel alone.

Some of you may have a deep faith and pray to God.

Grounded Spirituality

But there is a spirituality that is grounded and accessible to all – and no you don’t have to belong to any ‘organised’ faith.

We all like to believe in hope.

We all like to believe that we will live another day and that there are great things to come (and I acknowledge those for whom this might not feel easy)

How can your world stay steady?

By dropping out of your head and into the support of your body.

Find Solid Ground: Using Your Body to Anchor in Uncertainty

Life can feel overwhelming when emotions run high. This season is an emotional time for many of us - of excitement, anticipation, fear, dread, expecation, sorrow…it’s all there in the mix.

Our bodies are a way for us to navigate ourselves during these times. By bringing awareness to our bodies, our somatic awareness, we can find grounding and stability.

Practices like feeling your feet on the floor, slowing your breath, or even hugging a tree can help you feel stable in chaos.

Body Practices to Reconnect

When we connect to the earth, not only do we connect to its magnetic frequencies which energise us, the force of gravity literally keeps us grounded. Think of astronauts who become light headed as they float around in Space, and lose the connection to their bodies as their bone density deteriorates unless they do some weight bearing exercise.

When life is unpredictable, your body can be a reliable ally. Just like the earth, it is always there for you. It doesn’t let you down – that is if you take care of it - not only by feeding it with nourishing food, but also with nourishing thoughts.

Let your body be the compass to guide you to a place of safety and calm amidst the turbulence.

Neuroscience meets Spirituality

And when you can connect to this inner sanctuary within you, you can connect to something deeper.

Dropping into this body mind connection not only calms our nervous system, but our brain waves also drop out of the busy beta state to a slower alpha theta state.

This is the place of mindfulness and meditation. Our fraught and depleted system has an opportunity to rest.

The place where neuroscience meets spirituality.

Our Body as Inner Sanctuary

No matter what is happening around us, our body can be a place of inner stillness.

Now for those of you who find it tricky to stay still for too long, or find switching off difficult, unless you have worn yourself out, that is when moving freely yet consciously (rather than mindlessly) becomes a dance between movement with stillness.

And that is where the transformational dance system of Niio Dance can support you – as grounded spirituality in action. Even in the midst of the most chaotic movement or dance, we can still find an inner stillness within.
