The Secret to Finding Balance in Life

Finding balance in mind and body, work and life, a 'balanced' perspective..

The Secret to Finding Balance in Life

Just recently the oldest man in Britain John Tinniswood turned 111 years old. When previously asked what his secret was he cited, ‘moderation in everything and all things.’ He also advised to, ‘broaden your vision’.

‘Don't stay with one thing all the time or you'll be on a narrow path.’[1]

Well he must be onto something.

For example we cannot always be in ‘holiday mode’, in our parasympathetic nervous system of rest and digest (in any case how many of you find yourself with an agenda “on holiday”; sights to see, restaurants to try, history to absorb).

Perhaps we would be so relaxed that we would get very little done, and so we find ourselves with the push and pull of activity.

Even as I was meditating in the picture above, at one with the vastness and power of the sea, I felt very aware of the solidity and groundedness of the rocks, as the waves swirled and crashed in fire and chaos against them. And yes, finding that calm and balance in the midst of the elements of nature.

There is also healthy stress and challenge, which some people thrive on, and the dynamic push and pull of striving further – David Bowie (amongst many others) spoke of having to feel slightly uncomfortable to enter that creativity. In fact in an interview in 1999 [2] when predicting the power of the internet, he spoke of ‘feeling your feet barely touching the ground’ as you embark on new territory as an artist (dependant on the situation I would perhaps advise!)

The Yang for the yin, our outward fire energy for our inward water energy.

The Middle Way

Everything is in polarity in life, and this is also part of our somatic understanding, Often it is about finding the middle way which is the teaching of the Buddha, who realised that both extreme sensual indulgence and deprivation were ultimately useless.

Having come from a lavish lifestyle where he was a weathly nobleman living in luxury, he left that vacuousness existence behind to wander and see his country; becoming emaciated in the process as he survived on minimal nourishment, before he attained ‘enlightenment’ or ‘awakening’

But this is not a promotion piece on the righteous way of living through the eightfold path as a Buddhist.

We all have different ways of being because we are all so beautifully unique, and in that vein I am offering a variety of different online classes you can taste and drop into beginning September 18th. One of the biggest things about movement, is that it gives your brain a break, it disperses that intense neural activity and you gain new perspective. A balance of your mind and body.

Authentic Movement

(this one is a closed group – not drop in) – this is a deep dive movement meditation and opportunity for reflection that is also supportive and life affirming. We connect to our inner psyche and we connect together as we share in the tapestry of our universal human experiences.

Finding Your Voice Through Dance

is an energetic and relaxed movement session where we enjoy warming our bodies and open to freedom of expression, both in our dance and through our voice.

These two classes below help you to find moments of calm in the middle of busyness, for your work life balance.

Energizing Breathwork

We will look at techniques to find calm so that we can open our bodies to then receive more oxygen and life force. To energize our bodies and to give clarity and fresh perspective to our thoughts

Desktop Yoga

As it sounds – a mini workout to release stress and ease pain at your desk! There will be both seated and standing positions; and it is a perfect compliment to the energizing breathwork because when our bodies are strong and flexible, we are more open to receiving our breath and life force, to manage our emotions, our nervous system and physiology.

No experience is necessary for any of the classes. You come as you are. In fact you come to celebrate who you are. I would love to meet you soon.
