As we enter into this new year, how can we stay resilient and creative as we navigate our goals on this journey of life.
We have just had a new moon.
This can signify new beginnings, fresh starts and starting new projects. But actually in every moment we enter a new beginning.
With every breath, we enter into a new moment.
So we are in a new year, and we all have different expectations, desires, hopes and dreams for these next 12 months.
Life is a journey.
And the best journeys often have unexpected detours, or go off the beaten track.
Yes there are times when you just want to get from A to B and you want the journey to be smooth and efficient. Yet on our life journey when everything is rigidly planned, there is no room for manoevre. It may feel ‘safe’, but the minute some part of your structure weakens, then panic may start to set in.
New moons are a time for reflection, and as we may have set some clear goals for 2024 (or not), it is always good to stay open to surprises and unexpected challenges. To stay present and adaptable.
So first priority regardless of goals is tending to our mental health. By not giving ourselves plans that are so fixed as to be rigid. This in itself starts to cause underlying stress, because if we do not achieve those goals, we end up berating ourselves, or even worse deciding we are failures.
This is when we operate and listen from our minds only.
When we invite in our heart into our decision making, our mind becomes more focussed and relaxed. Our heart has 40,000 neurons – nerves cells that communicate with our whole body as well as our brain. By dropping into our heart our stress and anxiety decreases which means that we improve the blood flow to our brain for clearer thinking, and our creativity and intuition rise.
To make this shift into our bodily sensing our minds have to expand into a deeper, softer awareness.
And for us to have this somatic sensitivity, we need to take care of ourselves. To be able to do this, we have to be able to sense and listen into our body and its signals. But can you imagine getting guidance from your body if it is stiff and aching? In this scenario, rather than expanding, our minds shrink as our bodies contract from pain, and our vision becomes more myopic.
In addition it is no mean feat for many of us to truly feel our feelings, as some of us have been through trauma that makes us shut ourselves down. I was very moved to see Peter Levine, of Somatic Experiencing talk about how his work is created from his own healing journey just last night.
And this is why through the gentle holding of dance with its opportunity to be free and creative in expression, we give ourselves a new ease and flexibility in our bodies. Using dance as a healing tool in this way that honours your body is a far cry from the world of pushing and striving in more structured dance.
Rather it is a dance of the body that percolates into an opening and flexibility of our minds.
